Stop Food Waste Today!

Have you ever considered how lucky you are? You may think you're not because you don't have the nicest phone or the nicest car, but consider how much food you buy and throw away. There are many people around the world that don't have the option to buy all the food you are able to. They would never throw food away because they can't afford to. You may be able to afford it, but why would you throw away good food? Stop food waste in your home by learning how to plan, how to prep and how to store your food.

You  may not understand why you should stop food waste in your home right? According to Kate Lyons at The Guardian, 1.3bn tonnes of food is wasted each year. 45% of fruit and vegetables, 35% of seafood, 30% of cereals and 20% of meat are wasted and about 30% of available agricultural land that is used to grow or farm food that is wasted. In developed countries, consumers and retailers throw away between 30% and 40% of all food purchased, whereas in poorer countries only 5% to 16% of food is thrown away. (Lyons)

You might be asking, "How do I plan food?" You begin by determining the meals your family already loves and purchasing ingredients for those, ensuring that the food can be consumed. Before going shopping, make a meal plan for the week,  buy ingredients only for the meals you've planned and include quantities; so all the food will be used. Create a list of items that must be eaten as quickly as possible or to avoid buying again.  Buying in bulk only saves money if all of the food is consumed before it spoils. (Reducing)

Next, even if it can seem time consuming, preparing and storing food is very easy. You and your family will also be more likely to use the food if it is ready to go. Use your freezer to store food you won't eat before it expires and store already prepared meals. The freezer can be a waste-free kitchen’s best pal. Freezing produce, meat, dairy—even lightly beaten eggs!—is basically like hitting the pause button. (Keating) Another essential preservation tip is to work out how to prolong the food's shelf life. Many fruits give off natural gases as they ripen, making other nearby produce spoil faster. Store bananas, apples, and tomatoes by themselves, and store fruits and vegetables in different bins. (Reducing)

In conclusion, these simple hacks can help you stop food waste.  By changing your life in these small ways, you can help save the planet, and  hopefully will inspire you to take care of the planet in other ways as well, including contacting associations that are trying to save the planet, too. It's never too late to start. Make a change today!
